Cree leader | First woman elected Chief of Opaskwayak Cree Nation
I am a Cree woman, born and raised in Opaskwayak. My passion is to build leaders for future generations by sharing the holistic wisdom I observed growing up on the "rez" — a knowledge base that understands leadership not as isolated tasks, but as an intricate system of relationships between our people, our history, and our future.
Having served five terms as an elected leader and as the first woman elected as Chief of Opaskwayak Cree Nation, I have lived the complexities of governance and the profound responsibility of carrying a nation's vision.
I offer a provocative approach to leadership that bridges ancestral legacy. I am here to help our leaders rediscover how to lead together, ensuring our Nations flourish with a heart that honors our ancestors while building a fearless path forward.

As a business owner who has had the opportunity to partner with Opaskwayak, and former Chief Brown I have witnessed firsthand the leadership and dedication Maureen Brown demonstrated throughout her term. Together, we worked on initiatives aimed at strengthening long-term economic development, not only for the present but for future generations as well. While leadership roles may change over time, the contributions of those who help build strong foundations for their communities leave a lasting impact.
Maureen Brown is an extraordinary leader whose empathy, integrity, and lived commitment to transformational leadership set her apart in every way. Her work within Indigenous communities reflects deep respect, authenticity, and real-world impact — qualities that are urgently needed across all sectors today. She has a rare ability to both support and challenge people in ways that create lasting, meaningful change. As she expands her work into leadership and coaching, I have no doubt her influence will be profoundly felt. It's an honour to know and work with her.
Mo has a way of making people feel comfortable, understood, and genuinely cared for. She takes the time to sit down, ask real questions, and truly listen — which is something that feels rare and meaningful. Her warmth, openness, and willingness to have honest conversations create a space where people feel safe to be themselves. She doesn't shy away from emotions or the work it takes to build real connection with others. Over the years, Mo has been someone who has shown me what compassion, understanding, and true support look like. The way she shows up for people leaves a lasting impact, and anyone who spends time around her quickly feels the heart she brings into everything she does.
Maureen Brown is a strong and respected voice for the people she has served as a leader, mother, grandmother, aunty, and sister in her home community of Opaskwayak. Former Chief Brown exemplifies the values of integrity, understanding, accountability, and respect for her people. I have had the honour of witnessing Maureen lead her Nation with a clear vision grounded in what will best serve future generations.
She leads with passion, humility, and traditional teachings—demonstrating what it truly means to govern a Nation with purpose and care. Maureen made history as the first woman elected Chief of Opaskwayak Cree Nation, guiding a prosperity‑ and economic‑development‑focused community dedicated to the betterment of its people.
She remains steadfast in her beliefs as a strong Indigenous woman, carrying forward the teachings and responsibilities entrusted to her and passing them on to the next generation of leaders. Maureen Brown is an inspiration to all, and especially to Indigenous women.
